Signaling Effects of Crowdfunding on Venture Investors' Decision Making by Michael Mödl Michael Mödl examines the impact and signaling effects of crowd-based start-up financing on subsequent venture capital funding rounds. New Product Development in an Omnichannel World. Firms compete in an increasingly omnichannel environment. Customers no longer travel a single linear path but traverse a complex map invoking many channels, firm-owned and external, seamlessly through integrated technology. The associated changes in consumer behavior and the ways that firms engage consumers have led many to reshape the way they innovate their product portfolios. This article presents a structured overview of some of the most striking changes to firms' new product development (NPD) processes in B2C settings. Enlisting the classic NPD funnel, it describes how the omnichannel environment and its technologies affect speed and execution in each development stage. It illustrates key changes with examples from packaged goods, consumer technology, and fashion.
Whom do nascent ventures search for? Resource scarcity and linkage formation activities during new product development processes. External linkages allow nascent ventures to access crucial resources during the process of new product development. Forming external linkages can substantially contribute to a venture's performance. However, little is known about the paths of external linkage formation, as well as the circumstances that drive the choice to pursue one rather than another path. This gap deserves further investigation, because we do not know whether insights developed for incumbent firms also apply to nascent ventures: To address this gap, we explore a novel dataset of 370 venture creation processes. Using sequence analyses based on optimal matching techniques and cluster analyses, we reveal that nascent ventures pursue one of overall four distinct paths of linkage formation activities during new product development. Contrary to the findings of the strategy literature, we find that if nascent ventures engage in external linkages at all, they do not combine exploration- and exploitation-oriented linkages but form either exploration- or exploitation-oriented linkages. Additional regression analyses highlight the circumstances that lead nascent ventures to pursue one rather than the other pathways. Taken together, our analyses point out that resource scarcity constitutes an important factor shaping the linkage formation activities of nascent ventures. Accordingly, we show that nascent ventures tend not to optimize by adding complementary knowledge to the firm's knowledge base but rather to extend the existing knowledge base—a strategy which we call bricolage.
Cross-Functional Integration between Organizational Structure and the New Product Development Process. Substantial research has explored the influence of organizational structure on new product development (NPD) during the planning phase, but it has rarely been considered in the execution phase through cross-functional integration. This study aims to investigate the mediating effect of cross-functional integration between organizational structure and the NPD process. The study used a survey instrument to collect cross-sectional data of 247 participants from the telecommunications industry of Pakistan. We employed correlation and regression analyses to investigate interrelationships among the variables and test the research hypotheses. The findings indicate that the organic structure of the organization has a positive impact on the NPD process during the execution phase, and cross functional integration mediates between the relationships to improve the effectiveness of organizations. Virtual Reality in New Product Development: Insights from Prelaunch Sales Forecasting for Durables. This investigation examines how consumer durable goods producers can leverage virtual reality for new product development. First, the authors develop a prelaunch sales forecasting approach with two key features: virtual reality and an extended macro-flow model. To assess its effectiveness, the authors collect data from 631 potential buyers of two real-world innovations. The results reveal that the new approach yields highly accurate prelaunch forecasts across the two field studies: compared with the actual sales data tracked after the product launches, the prediction errors for the aggregated first-year sales are only 1.9% (Study 1a, original prelaunch sales forecast),.0% (Study 1b, forecast with actual advertisement spending), and 20.0% (Study 1b, original prelaunch forecast). Moreover, the average mean absolute percentage error for the monthly sales is only 23% across both studies. Second, to understand the mechanisms of virtual reality, the authors conduct a controlled laboratory experiment. The findings reveal that virtual reality fosters behavioral consistency between participants' information search, preferences, and buying behavior. Moreover, virtual reality enhances participants' perceptions related to presence and vividness, but not their perceptions related to alternative theoretical perspectives. Finally, the authors provide recommendations for when and how managers can use virtual reality in new product development.
Social media and sensemaking patterns in new product development: demystifying the customer sentiment. Artificial intelligence by principle is developed to assist but also support decision making processes. In our study, we explore how information retrieved from social media can assist decision-making processes for new product development (NPD). We focus on consumers' emotions that are expressed through social media and analyse the variations of their sentiments in all the stages of NPD. We collect data from Twitter that reveal consumers' appreciation of aspects of the design of a newly launched model of an innovative automotive company. We adopt the sensemaking approach coupled with the use of fuzzy logic for text mining. This combinatory methodological approach enables us to retrieve consensus from the data and to explore the variations of sentiments of the customers about the product and define the polarity of these emotions for each of the NPD stages. The analysis identifies sensemaking patterns in Twitter data and explains the NPD process and the associated steps where the social interactions from customers can have an iterative role. We conclude the paper by outlining an agenda for future research in the NPD process and the role of the customer opinion through sensemaking mechanisms.

How Can Large Manufacturers Digitalize Their Business Models? A Framework for Orchestrating Industrial Ecosystems. For manufacturers, remaining competitive depends on their ability to digitalize their business models (i.e., offer digital and digitally enhanced products and services). To achieve this, they must engage with new digital partners and help their existing suppliers, partners, and other stakeholders to digitalize. Orchestrating this growing ecosystem is challenging. Manufacturers struggle with this endeavor because of specific barriers associated with their existing legacy business model and related to their lack of digital vision, product-centric value chains, and a bias toward firm-centered profit formulas. To overcome these barriers, leading manufacturers have developed new approaches to ecosystem orchestration.
Parallel Play: Startups, Nascent Markets, and Effective Business-model Design. Prior research has advanced several explanations for entrepreneurial success in nascent markets but leaves a key imperative unexplored: the business model. By studying five ventures in a nascent financial-technology market, we develop a novel theoretical framework for understanding how entrepreneurs effectively design business models: parallel play. Similar to parallel play by preschoolers, entrepreneurs engaged in parallel play interweave action, cognition, and timing to accelerate learning about a novel world. Specifically, they (1) borrow from peers and focus on established substitutes for their services or products, (2) test assumptions, then commit to a broad business-model template, and (3) pause before elaborating the activity system. The insights from our framework contribute to research on optimal distinctiveness and to the learning and evolutionary-adjustment literatures. More broadly, we blend organization theory with a fresh theoretical lens—business-model processes—to highlight how organizations actually work and create value.
The Business Model Matrix: A Kit for Designing and Innovating Business Models. Purpose: How is it possible to systematically develop business model innovations for different domains? This paper provides a novel answer, using a methodological approach called Business Model Matrix (BMM), and addresses business model threats with appropriate strategies and concepts to develop innovative and comprehensive business models. Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper addresses the idea of a pattern-based development of business models and merges different approaches to offer a business model construction kit for systematic development. Findings: The approach demonstrates how business models can be developed using relevant issues of a business model that need to be answered (business model questions) with appropriate proposals or patterns that are able to tackle the issues raised (business model answers). Research limitations/Implictions: The method presented here is primarily aimed at modelers who have developed at least a basic concept of a business model and are looking for systematic ways to innovate the developed concept transparently. Originality/Value: The added value of the presented approach lies in the fact that both a holistic structure for considering all relevant aspects of a business model and suitable choices for each business model aspect are provided. The Technopreneurial Leader Singapore. The article discusses developments in the efforts by the government of Singapore to transform its public and private sectors in a bid to establish a better environment for technopreneurship, risk-taking, and creativity as of late November 2000. It examines such statistics as mobile phone penetration, broadband access, and Internet dial-up penetration in the country. The opinion of National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) chairperson Teo Ming Kian on their strategy is also cited.
Teaching Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Starting in 2002 and extending until 2007 over two hundred students took a 4-month, post-graduate course at the Nanyang "Technnopreneurship" Center at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The purpose of the course was to produce high tech entrepreneurs at ease with complexity. This paper evaluates the pedagogy as designed and taught by Prof. Tan Teng-Kee and his associates. The aim was to create an entrepreneurial "ecosystem" with highly contrasting values, past and present, triumph and disaster, doubt and certainty etc. A methodology was devised which measured not simply the salience of various values but the extent to which contrasting values had been integrated, the hypothesis being that innovation requires values to be fused. The results were highly positive for the Technopreneurship program.

Externalities or Experience? Localization Economies and Start-up Business Survival. This study examines whether spatial variations in the human capital of business owners help explain why the failure rates of new businesses tend to be lower in areas where similar businesses are concentrated. More specifically, I test whether the prior industry experience of the firm's owner/founder has a mediating influence on the relationship between industrial localization and new business failure for six industry sectors. Localization is found to have either a beneficial or a damaging relationship to new firm survival, depending on the industry in question. Localization reduces the likelihood of failure in two sectors, while competition effects prevail in two others. When industry experience is added to the models, the benefits of localization diminish, but only for entrants in the business, professional, and information services sector and only by a small amount. This suggests that at least some of the observed benefits of localization are due to regional differences in embodied human capital, but localization economies remain significant. Further study is needed to see if such mediating effects are common among a wider array of more narrowly defined industries and for other forms of entrepreneurial human capital.

The real effect of liquidity provision on entrepreneurial financing: evidence from a natural experiment in China. This paper utilizes a natural experiment - the establishment of the Shenzhen Small and Medium Enterprises Board (SME Board) - as an exogenous shock of liquidity provision to venture capital (VC) investment in China. The establishing of the SME Board has enabled the disentangling of the supply side from the demand side of entrepreneurial financing. The results show that the establishment of the SME Board had a strong positive impact on VC investment activities. The impact, however, occurs mainly through the supply side channel, in the form of an influx of first-time VC funds and new government-sponsored VC funds. Such supply shocks, created by inexperienced - but politically connected - VCs, tend to overheat the VC market in the short-run. The results are robust against various regression specifications and endogeneity concerns. This research highlights the importance of liquidity provision, institutional factors and government policies on the development of entrepreneurial financing.
The entrepreneurial financing of the immigrant entrepreneurs: a literature review. There is an increasing interest in the phenomenon of immigrant entrepreneurship. Despite the growing number of studies, the financing aspect of immigrant entrepreneurship is still an emergent subject. In this paper, we critically and systematically review the field of the entrepreneurial financing of immigrant entrepreneurs. For this purpose, we conduct a two-step analysis of 37 systematically selected articles. In the first step, we provide an overall description of the field, while in the second step we perform a SWOT analysis on different aspects of the field, including the units of analysis, the main questions, and the use of theories and methods in the field. The review identifies gaps and weaknesses in the field, suggests potential opportunities for future research, and highlights some threats that could impede the implementation of future opportunities. Finally, the review suggests further questions to be explored for future advancement of knowledge in the field.

How Legacy Companies Can Pivot to a Platform Model. The growth of artificial intelligence has enabled a variety of new strategies and business models, from programmatic ad targeting to the sharing economy to the metaverse. The companies that have been most successful in employing these models — digital natives, almost to a one — have been “multi-sided platforms,” in which a company at the hub of an ecosystem or business network coordinates services and reduces friction for customers. Facebook, Apple, Airbnb, Amazon, Google, Uber, Alibaba, Tencent, and the other leading platform companies have created value at astounding rates.
How Can Large Manufacturers Digitalize Their Business Models? A Framework for Orchestrating Industrial Ecosystems. For manufacturers, remaining competitive depends on their ability to digitalize their business models (i.e., offer digital and digitally enhanced products and services). To achieve this, they must engage with new digital partners and help their existing suppliers, partners, and other stakeholders to digitalize. Orchestrating this growing ecosystem is challenging. Manufacturers struggle with this endeavor because of specific barriers associated with their existing legacy business model and related to their lack of digital vision, product-centric value chains, and a bias toward firm-centered profit formulas. To overcome these barriers, leading manufacturers have developed new approaches to ecosystem orchestration.
Relationship Building in IoT Platform Models - the Case of the Danfoss Group. Purpose: This paper investigates the implications for a manufacturer's relationship building towards B2B customers and suppliers as a consequence of Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform models. Design/Methodology/Approach: Explorative single case study with embedded sub-cases. Qualitative research approach. Semi-structured interviews. Findings: The paper identifies two ways of doing relationship building when it comes to IoT platform models. Relationship building can take place through a Classic Relationship IoT platform model (characterized by low complexity) or a New Relationship IoT platform model (characterized by high complexity). In both models, the manufacturer aims for high stickiness towards the customers. In the New Relationship model, however, low stickiness towards suppliers is aimed for in order to enable the manufacturer to orchestrate the stakeholder constellation dynamically. In addition, a driver for the low stickiness aim towards suppliers can be found in a motive to outsource risks to suppliers in IoT markets characterized by high degrees of turbulence and growth. Research limitations/implications: The study points to the fact that a manufacturer should consider how the new technology IoT gives opportunities for different ways of relating to stakeholders, e.g. customers and suppliers, in the business model. Originality/Value: Based on primary data collection the research shows how strategic relationship building can help a manufacturer create value with customers and suppliers within IoT platform models. Platform technology management of biotechnology companies in Japan. This study quantitatively and chronologically analyzed the technology management of Japanese biotechnology companies using the patent application data of platforms and products, including patent categorization methods. Nine listed platform companies were analyzed. The results showed that most of the companies continuously maintained their initial platform technologies by filing updated patents, but without filing patents of new platform technologies. Their business models were shifted from a platform model to a platform-product, hybrid model and not a product-focused model. Their product patents generated from platform technologies were mainly for tools, diagnostics, and cell processing technologies, not therapeutics, except in one case; related therapeutics patents were mainly filed by corporate partners. Existing papers that analyzed Japanese biotechnology companies were verified to be partially correct based on our high-resolution patent categorization data; these results supported the usefulness of our approach. Does going global or staying local improve the long‐term survival and performance of IPOs? Research Summary: This empirical study investigates the impact of internationalization on the long‐term performance of U.S. IPOs (initial public offerings). We find that internationalized IPOs exhibit higher survival rates, and if an internationalized IPO is subsequently delisted, that delisting is significantly more likely to result in a positive outcome when compared to the delisting outcomes for domestic‐only IPOs. In addition, over 5‐ and 10‐year holding periods following the IPO, a portfolio of the internationalized firms exhibits significantly positive risk‐adjusted abnormal stock returns, whereas the return for a portfolio of the domestic‐only firms was lower and generally not significantly different than zero. In short, we add to the existing literature on factors that influence IPO survival and performance and show that internationalization also is an important firm characteristic. Managerial Summary: We examine the impact of internationalization on the survival and stock return performance of IPO firms. More specifically, we investigate the performance of two categories of U.S. IPOs: companies that go public and have international operations and companies that are purely domestic firms. Our results suggest that IPO firms that are internationalized have higher survival rates than domestic‐only firms and also enjoy superior subsequent stock performance. This study provides novel insights and additional descriptive evidence that going global is better for the survival and performance of IPOs.
'Going Global': The Case of Chinese Brands. Despite its position as the 'world's largest Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)', the presence of China's brands is negligible in the global market. However, inspired by many internal and external factors, they are striving hard to position themselves as global brands. While some of them were extremely successful, many of their counterparts failed miserably. This study tries to draw up on the successful and failed cases of Chinese brands 'going global' to generate guidelines for the aspiring Chinese global brands. The study also tries to develop a global brand building strategy for Chinese brands based on the brand orientation framework of Urde (1999). Research on the scope of global brands in Chinese markets is abundant, but there are few studies that explore the scope of Chinese brands in the global market and the branding strategies required to compete in the global market. This study fills this gap by examining the prospects and challenges of Chinese brands in the global market.
Going international versus going global. The Case of the European Steel Pipe SMES. In a world where competitiveness has become the second nature of the business environment, an insight on the organizations' endeavour to go international seems natural. And yet, most of the times, under the lens of the worldwide researchers and practitioners, corporations have been settled as milestones. In this context, focusing on the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), on the managerial and entrepreneurial micro-universe may generate an alternative perspective on their approach on the international markets versus the global market. Starting from this premise, the paper intends to analyze the business internationalization versus business globalization perspectives assumed by managers of SMEs at present. The distinction between the two approaches is based on a step-by-step touch of the specialized markets versus a straight forward venture into far-away markets with a view to obtain higher profits. The emphasis was laid on 107 European steel pipe SMEs, whose managers responded to a 15-item questionnaire regarding their market strategies and experiences. As the results show, the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents have a considerable impact on their approaches on the issue, the choice for going international or going global relying on the subjects' age, number of foreign partners, experience on the foreign markets and education field.

The Impact of Innovation Competitive Advantage on Product Quality for Sustainable Growth among SMEs: An Empirical Analysis. Supported by the dynamic capabilities theory of the firm, this study considered innovation competitive advantage, product quality, and technology adoption as the core dynamic capabilities of manufacturing SMEs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of two components of innovation competitive advantage, that is, customer preference and strategic business model, on product quality for sustainable growth among SMEs. It also examined the mediating effect of technology adoption on the relationship between innovation competitive advantage and product quality. Survey data was collected from 245 manufacturing SMEs in Nigeria and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results revealed that customer preference does not directly affect product quality; however, technology adoption mediates the relationship between customer preference and product quality. The strategic business model was found to have a significant positive effect on product quality, and this relationship was mediated by technology adoption as well. This research recommends that manufacturing SME managers recognise that improving product quality through innovation competitive advantage strategies and technology adoption is advantageous for the sustainable growth of SMEs.
Firm Sustainable Growth during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Customer Concentration. Due to the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), business environmental uncertainty, a restricted flow of personnel and materials, and changes in consumer demand have impacted business operations and financial performance. This study investigates the relationship between COVID-19, customer concentration, and sustainable growth based on data from listed companies in China. The results reveal that COVID-19 has had a negative impact on sustainable growth, but customer concentration can mitigate this negative association. By emphasizing the moderating effect of customer concentration on the relationship between COVID-19 and sustainable growth, this study provides new insights for firms who are seeking to mitigate the negative shocks of COVID-19 and promote sustainable development. Barriers to Start-Up And Sustainable Growth of SMMEs: A Comparative Study Between South Africa And Lesotho. In the African context, Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) still face challenges that hinder their start-up and growth. This paper used a quantitative approach to identify commonalities and differences pertaining to impediments to SMMEs start-up and growth in South Africa and Lesotho. The findings reveal that although there are common barriers to SMMEs start-up and growth in both countries, these barriers are more pronounced in South Africa than in Lesotho. The Mann Whitney U test showed that the perception that access to finance, high interest rates and income tax are barriers to start a business is statistically significantly higher in South Africa than in Lesotho. In addition, statistically, high interest rates, income tax and high rental charges are significantly highly perceived as barriers to business growth in South Africa than in Lesotho. Thus, this paper advocates for tailor-made solutions to deal with these impediments.
Impact of financial leverage on sustainable growth, market performance, and profitability. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of financial leverage on the performance of 424 Pakistani nonfinancial listed companies over the 2001–2017 period. Three measures of financial leverage, i.e., short-term debt (STDL), long-term debt (LTDL), and total debt (TLEVR), were applied to examine their impact on performance, i.e., sustainable growth (SGR), Tobin's Q, return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and return on sales (ROS). Robust results obtained using the generalized method of moments (GMM) report a significant negative impact of financial leverage on performance. The results also confirm an inverted U-shaped relationship between financial leverage and performance, indicating that an increase in the financial leverage of Pakistani listed companies increases their performance up to a certain level, and after that, a further increase in financial leverage decreases their performance. The results further suggest that STDL is a main contributing source of debt that causes a higher risk of refinancing for companies and thus negatively affects performance. This study's findings are useful for academics, management, policymakers, and regulators to understand the importance of financial leverage and to choose between STDL and LTDL to fund financial needs.
