Advances and challenges in sustainable tourism toward a green economy This paper provides an overview of the interrelationships between tourism and sustainability from a cross-disciplinary perspective. The current challenges and barriers in the tourism sustainability, such as high energy use, extensive water consumption and habitat destruction, are first reviewed. Then the key cross-disciplinary elements in sustainable tourism, including green energy, green transportation, green buildings, green infrastructure, green agriculture and smart technologies, are discussed. To overcome the challenges and barriers, a few implementation strategies on achieving sustainable tourism from the aspects of policy/regulation, institution, finance, technology and culture are proposed, along with the framework and details of a key performance indicator system. Finally, prospects of the potential for tourism to contribute to the transformative changes, e.g., a green economy system, are illustrated. This paper shine a light on issues of importance within sustainable tourism and encourage researchers from different disciplines in investigating the inter-relationships among community/culture, environment/ecology, and energy/water/food more broadly.
Challenges in environmental sustainability of renewable energy options in Singapore Renewable and sustainable are often used synonymously. This study examines the sustainability of switching from fossil-based electricity generation to renewable energy systems. Life cycle assessment (LCA) of both fossil- and renewable-based electricity generation were modeled for four environmental impact categories, in the context of Singapore city.
No 'green deal' will be ambitious enough to save the planet Thunberg reflects on the important role of each individual in doing their share of saving the planet. The countries phasing out internal combustion engines The European Union approved on Monday (Mar 27) a deal that will lead to the phaseout of sales of new fossil fuel cars by 2035, with a final green light by energy ministers due on Tuesday. The 27-nation bloc joins more than a dozen other nations which have set deadlines for ending sales of new cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) which emit toxic gasses that are a major driver of climate change.
Pilot recycling plant uses fruit peels to break down metal waste in lithium batteries Currently, less than 5 per cent of spent lithium-ion batteries are recycled globally and the volume of these used batteries is set to hit 11 million tonnes by 2030. A recycling plant in Singapore is turning spent lithium batteries into useful metals, with the help of discarded fruit peels. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) researchers who developed the technology of using fruit peels to tackle battery waste are working with local battery recycling and processing firm Se-cure Waste Management on the pilot project.
