Using JoVE in Your Teaching

JoVE videos can be embedded in Brightspace, and you can also use JoVE quizzes to test your students' understanding. 


Embedding JoVE Videos in Brightspace

1. Create a personal account with JoVE if you haven't done so already, and login.

2. Select the video that you wish to embed, then click on Embed Video


3. Next, select Copy Embed Code.


4. In your POLITEMall course site, select Create New.


5. Choose HTML Document.


6. Click on the source code icon.


7. Select all the prefilled codes and delete them.


8. Now, paste the codes that you copied from JoVE. Use ctrl + V on your keyboard.


9. Name the embedded video and check that it's playing properly.

Creating Tests in JoVE

You can create interactive quizzes to test students' learning in JoVE. The quiz feature is only available for videos in JoVE Science Education

Note: TP subscribes to the following collections in Science Education: Basic Biology: General Laboratory Techniques, Basic Methods in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biology 2: Mouse, Zebrafish, and Chick, and Lab Animal Research.


Here are the steps:

1. Register for a JoVE account, if you have not already done so, at: https://www.jove.com/accountPlease use your TP staff email to create an account. After creating your account, sign in by clicking on Log In at the top right corner of the page.


2. Search or browse for your desired video under Science Education> Basic Biology. At the video page, click on Create a JoVE Test


3. Click on your desired video title under “Choose a subject”.


4. Build your test. You can choose to use the prepared questions in the question bank. 10 questions would be pre-selected, with the correct answer marked in the radio button. To remove a question, simply select “Don’t Use” at the bottom of each question.


5. You can create your own questions, by clicking on Add Question, at the bottom of the page.


6. Once the quiz is completed and saved, key in your class TP student email addresses, separated by a comma in between each address. Then click on “Update List”. Finally, you can send the test to your students.


7. Lecturers can view your students’ progress at: https://www.jove.com/tests, under “Your Tests”. Results can be exported as a .csv file.


How Students Can Access JoVE Tests

In order to access JoVE tests off-campus, students need to first create a personalized JoVE account using their TP student email.

After receiving the JoVE tests invitation, students should click on the second link and sign into JoVE using the JoVE log in account that they had created.
