Tips for Managing Stress

Breathe deeply
Feeling anxious and short of breath? Breathe deeply through your nose so that air fills your abdomen. Hold your breath for four counts, then release it over eight counts. Repeat this a few times but stop if you feel light-headed.

Enjoy a hobby
Do something which you've always enjoyed or a pick up a new hobby! Learning something new allows you to de-stress, while becoming better at a skill can boost your confidence and self-esteem. You don't have to be great at the hobby, just use it as a means to relax and discover yourself at your own pace.

Exercise
Doing a sport or even just brisk walking can help to reduce stress by releasing feel-good hormones. If it is hard for you to schedule exercise into your hectic schedule, try alighting one stop early and get to your destination by walking. Stretching before, while or after walking can help to relax any tight muscles.

Get some light
Exposure to sunlight can increase serotonin, which is a hormone associated with mood regulation. Not getting enough sum exposure can lead to seasonal affective disorder, which is a mood disorder that is a type of depression.

Go on a digital detox
Are you spending too much time on your devices at the expense of self-care routines or other ways of using your time more productively? If so, consider doing a mini detox by taking some time-off from your devices either for a few hours each day or over the weekend. Mute your notifications, keep your devices far from yourself and spend time on offline activities which you enjoy.

Have regular meals
Your body is still growing and needs to be nourished! Try to eat something every three or four hours--unless you’re sleeping, of course!--to fuel your body and mind. Don't skip breakfast as it is necessary to keep your blood sugar level constant. Healthy food and snacks are the best options, but you can eat something a little less healthy once in a while.

Listen to music
Music can improve our mood, increase our concentration, promote a sense of wellbeing, and help us to reflect on our emotions and experiences.

Sleep
All of us need at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep in order to function well. Remember to turn off your electronic devices and games at least half an hour before bed, so as to reduce the amount of mental stimulation that may keep you awake. The best way to have a good sleep at night is to wake up and go to sleep at approximately the same time every day. Getting enough sleep is a good way to cope with stress.

Talk to someone
Share your feelings of stress and anxiety with someone who is close to you, or someone whom you can trust. That person may be going through the same experiences as you or has done so before. Just talking about what you are experiencing can reduce your stress and help you to cope better. If you need help with deeper issues, do talk to a TP counsellor or other trained professionals (refer to the Getting help section).

Write it down
Try keeping a journal to record your thoughts, especially when you feel the need to get things out of your chest and think more clearly. It can be a notebook or you can use a note-taking or journaling app, whichever works better for you.
